The Purging of the Great Thorns

The sun was not merely a ball of burning gas to the folk of the Sandleford Warren; it was Frith, the Great Eye, the golden source of all life and the witness to every twitch of a whisker. But on this day, the air felt heavy, tasting of ozone and the cold, sharp scent of worked iron. Fiver, the small, twitching seer of the rabbits, sat atop the Honeycomb, his ears flat against his back. "It’s coming, Hazel", he whispered, his voice trembling like a leaf in a gale. "A great white light. Not the light of Frith that warms the fur, but a light that eats the world. Man has grown too clever. He has stolen the fire from the center of the earth and pointed it at the sky". Hazel looked toward the horizon. He couldn’t see the, "Great Thorns"—the long, silver cylinders Man had hidden in the ground—but he felt the vibration in his paws. The world of men was screaming. The Notion of Integrity

The notion of integrity is often shaped by one’s upbringing, experiences, and the environment in which they exist. Reflecting on this, I find myself questioning how many individuals from Balderstone School can truly match my level of integrity. With each passing generation, I observe a disheartening decline in the values and principles upheld by my peers. In a world increasingly driven by convenience and superficiality, the depth of character seems to wane, leaving behind a landscape where integrity is often sacrificed for momentary gain. The contrast is stark; while I strive to maintain authenticity and ethical standards, those around me frequently succumb to pressures that compromise their moral compass.

In this context, it becomes evident that integrity is not merely a personal trait but a reflection of the societal influences that shape us. Those who once attended Balderstone School may have had opportunities to cultivate strong ethical foundations, yet I wonder how many have embraced this gift. The deterioration I witness speaks not only of individual choices but also of a collective mindset that often celebrates mediocrity over merit. As I navigate my path, I am reminded that integrity is a rare gem, one that requires constant vigilance and commitment to uphold. Therefore, I am skeptical about finding a match to my level of integrity among my contemporaries, particularly when the broader cultural narrative seems to favour a retreat from the values that once defined us.
